7/20/2009"Ponderosa for Smart Phones — Taking the Lead in Mobility ERP Software for the Building Materials Industry"
July 20, 2009 — Computer Associates, Inc. today announced that it has enhanced its Ponderosa Lumber, Building Materials and Millwork Distribution Software to support the next-generation of ‘smart phones’, including the Apple iPhone.

‘Smart Phones’ Deliver Cost and Convenience Benefits

Ponderosa’s browser-based graphical user interface (GUI) has been scaled to provide users with an experience similar in performance, presentation and responsiveness to accessing the software on their PC in the office. Sales reps can enter orders―including configured units right at the job site―confirm inventory availability and check order status, and business owners can monitor key business performance indicators (KPIs) as graphical, easy-to read reports when traveling.

Frank Motta, vice president of Project Management at CAI said, “We want to provide our lumber and building materials clients with full, ‘anywhere, anytime’ access to their Ponderosa software, whether they’re working in the field or in the office. The logical next step was to scale the software to provide unfettered usability on the new class of web-enabled smart phones. Users can view and use Ponderosa on their smart phone the way the software as designed to be seen.”

By providing PC desktop-class access to Ponderosa’s integrated sales, inventory, production, business intelligence and accounting software modules, smart phones offer a price-competitive and more convenient alternative to laptops.

“Within the building materials industry, smart phones have been gaining in popularity, primarily as a way to provide e-mail access to field employees,” said Jim McCooey, president of CAI. “Until now, the devices’ relatively small displays and web-browsing area have limited the use of building materials business software to simple remote order entry. The Ponderosa smart phone application overcomes the phones’ usability limitations with a new browser-based interface that provides full, unrestricted viewing – even on the smallest of displays—wherever you can access the Internet.”

A smart phone is a mobile phone offering advanced capabilities such as push e-mail, personal organizer, mobile telephone, text messaging, internet faxing, web browsing, calendar planner, data and document storage and other wireless information services as well as a touch screen interface. Some of the more advanced products offer integrated GPS-powered Maps and a built-in compass.

“Using newly developed technology, the Ponderosa smart phone application ensures that users are never staring at a blank browser screen and an hourglass icon, waiting for information, Motta added. “This proprietary technology represents a fundamental shift by eliminating the start-stop nature of other web applications.”

Commitment to Leading-Edge Technology for the LBM Industry

“The smart phone Ponderosa app is another example of our continued commitment to develop technology solutions that help our clients perform their jobs more efficiently and keep them on the cutting edge of building materials software and technology,“ McCooey added.
